Marriage Requirements for Muslim Converts |
Equality of Converts with Born Muslims
Conversion to Islam, if done correctly, allows converts to become fully and immediately Muslim.
Therefore, after conversion, there is no longer any difference between a Muslim by birth and someone who adopted the Islamic religion by conversion during the course of his or her life.
That is why there is nothing special about Muslim marriage for converts.

Special Case: Female Convert’s Legal Guardian (Wali)
However, a woman who has converted to Islam does not have a legal representative (wali) in her family and one will need to be appointed if she wishes to get married.
There are two possible situations.
- If the future wife lives in a Muslim country, her guardian may be a representative of the authorities, a Muslim judge (qadi) or a person the judge appoints.
However, each country has its own particular customs that must be respected.
- If the future wife lives in a non-Muslim country, she should ask a community leader, an imam, or even any Muslim who has sufficient knowledge of Islamic rules and is honest and trustworthy, to be her legal representative (wali).
